This is the second volume of a history of the University of Manchester since 1951. It spans seventeen critical years in which public funding was contracting, student grants were diminishing, instructions from the government and the University Grants Commission were multiplying, and universities feared for their reputation in the public eye. It provides a frank account of the University's struggle against these difficulties and its efforts to prove the value of university education to society and the economy. This volume describes and analyses not only academic developments and changes in the structure and finances of the University, but the opinions and social and political lives of the staff and their students as well. It also examines the controversies of the 1970s and 1980s over such issues as feminism, free speech, ethical investment, academic freedom and the quest for efficient management. The author draws on official records, staff and student newspapers, and personal interviews with people who experienced the University in very different ways. With its wide range of academic interests and large student population, the University of Manchester was the biggest unitary university in the country, and its history illustrates the problems faced by almost all British universities. The books will appeal to past and present staff of the University and its alumni, and to anyone interested in the debates surrounding higher education in the late twentieth century. The Browne report advocates, in effect, the privatisation of higher education in England. With the proposed removal of the current cap on student fees and the removal of state funding from most undergraduate degree programmes, universities are set for a period of major reorganisation not seen since the higher education reforms in the 1960s. This book brings together some of the leading figures in Higher Education in the UK to set out what they see as the role of the university in public life. The book argues for a more balanced understanding of the value of universities than that outlined in the Browne Report. "From an international standpoint, the docent position in Norway is unique, insomuch as it is a top academic position equivalent to a professorship. This book combines a thorough examination of the docent’s role and place within the higher educational system with a presentation of a development project to move associate professors up the career ladder to the docent level at the University of Agder (UiA). The first part of the book looks at the Norwegian docent in historical, current and R&D theoretical perspectives. Rather than embracing difference as a reflection of wider society, academic ecosystems seek to normalise and homogenise ways of working and of being a researcher. As a consequence, ableism in academia is endemic. However, to date no attempt has been made to theorise experiences of ableism in academia. Ableism in Academia provides an interdisciplinary outlook on ableism that is currently missing. Through reporting research data and exploring personal experiences, the contributors theorise and conceptualise what it means to be/work outside the stereotypical norm. The volume brings together a range of perspectives, including feminism, post-structuralism, crip theory and disability theory, and draws on the width and breadth of a number of related disciplines. Contributors use technicism, leadership, social justice theories and theories of embodiment to raise awareness and increase understanding of the marginalised – that is, those academics who are not perfect. These theories are placed in the context of neoliberal academia, which is distant from the privileged and romanticised versions that exist in the public and internalised imaginations of academics, and used to interrogate aspects of identity, aspects of how disability is performed, and to argue that ableism is not just a disability issue. This open access book explores the link between African languages, decolonisation and transformation. It has its origins in a survey of students and instructors at higher education institutions both inside and outside Africa, and takes as a starting point the 2015 student-led #RhodesMustFall movement which spread across universities in South Africa. Damit Lehramtsstudierende Lehr-Lernprozesse so gestalten, dass bei Lernenden Erkenntnisprozesse initiiert und unterstützt werden, müssen sie sich vertieft mit den Fachinhalten auseinandersetzen. Die Identifizierung von lernbedeutsamen Zusammenhängen und die Übertragung in Lernschritte sind für Studierende nachweislich schwierig. Daher werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit Verstehens -prozesse von Lehramtsstudierenden bei der Erschließung eines komplexen fachlichen Sachverhaltes und dessen fachdidaktische Verwertung untersucht. Dazu wurde eine Fallstudie mit N ,= ,14 Versuchspersonen durchgeführt, für die ein leitfragenstütztes Lehr-Lernkonzept entwickelt wurde, um eine Vertretungsstunde für einen Leistungskurs Chemie zur Auswertung der Analyse eines Farbstoffgemisches zu erarbeiten. Zur Erschließung der inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge wurden englische Lehrbuchtexte (nachweislich weniger lückenhaft in ihren Argumentationslinien als deutsche) eingesetzt. Ausgewertet wurden die Antworten zu den Leitfragen. Die Auswertung erfolgte mit einem auf Propositionen aufbauenden Kategoriensystem. Die Studierenden haben nur teilweise die relevanten Textpassagen eigenständig erkannt. Entscheidend waren die fachlichen Voraussetzungen. Eine Zunahme im fachlichen Verständnis wirkte sich positiv auf die fachdidaktische Verwertung des erworbenen Wissens aus. Folglich sind für die Lehre leitfragenstützte Lehr-Lernkonzepte, auch unter Einbindung englischer Lehrbuchtexte, für eine vertiefte Wissensverarbeitung zu empfehlen.

Using Marxist critique, this book explores manifestations of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education and demonstrates how it contributes to the functioning and existence of the capitalist university. Challenging the idea that AI is a break from previous capitalist technologies, the book offers nuanced examination of the impacts of AI on the control and regulation of academic work and labour, on digital learning and remote teaching, and on the value of learning and knowledge. Applying a Marxist perspective, Preston argues that commodity fetishism, surveillance, and increasing productivity ushered in by the growth of AI, further alienates and exploits academic labour and commodifies learning and research. Standards für den allgemeinbildenden Unterricht in den Sekundarstufen sind institutionell implementiert und ihre Wirkungen gut erforscht. Für den berufsbildenden naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht, etwa im Bereich Körperpflege, gilt das bislang nicht. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden forschungsbasierte Standards für das Fach Körperpflege im Berufsbild Friseur:in formuliert. Dazu wurden N = 29 Lehrkräfte aus dem Bereich Körperpflege in acht leitfadengestützten Fokusgruppen-Interviews zu fachdidaktischen Aspekten des Unterrichtens in Friseur:innenklassen befragt. Die Interviews wurden mit der inhaltlich-strukturierenden qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Kuckartz (2018) ausgewertet und die Ergebnisse anschließend in einer Fragebogenerhebung mit weiteren Körperpflege-Lehrkräften (N = 34) validiert. Aus der Analyse der Interviews und den Ergebnissen der Fragebogenerhebung wurden Standards abgeleitet. Durch dieses Vorgehen konnten 40 Standards in sieben fachdidaktischen Facetten definiert werden. Drei Facetten bilden dabei das Kernelement des Unterrichtens in Friseur:innenklassen: Das Wissen über die Zusammensetzung der Schüler:innenschaft, das Wissen über die spezifischen Vermittlungsstrategien und das Wissen über die Lernziele des Faches. Außerdem zeigt sich eine authentische Ausrichtung an konkreten Handlungen im Berufsbild als essentiell für eine Fachdidaktik Körperpflege. Die Formulierung von Standards trägt zur fachdidaktischen Fundierung eines kompetenzorientierten Unterrichts in Friseur:innenklassen bei.

Wie verändert sich das Arbeiten und Lernen des Bildungspersonals in der Beruflichen Bildung, Erwachsenenbildung und Hochschulbildung unter den Bedingungen der digitalen Transformation? Diese Frage steht im Zentrum der Monografie, die aus einer erziehungs- und bildungswissenschaftlichen Perspektive eruiert, inwiefern sich die Konzepte von New Work und New Learning als Deutungsrahmen für die tiefgreifenden Veränderungsprozesse eignen. Die Monografie verbindet dabei einen historischen Blick auf die Diskurse um New Work und New Learning, ein Literaturreview sowie qualitative Studienergebnisse. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich das Arbeiten und Lernen des Bildungspersonals zunehmend durch flexible Strukturen und individuelle Gestaltung auszeichnet. This book focuses on Australian students’ engagement and learning in the Indo-Pacific through the New Colombo Plan (NCP), the Australian Government’s flagship initiative for student mobility and public diplomacy. By analysing the experiences, tensions, and both individual and societal impacts of Australian student mobility to the Indo-Pacific, the book responds to the pressing need for more nuanced understandings of the short- and long-term effects of such study-abroad programs. It also discusses critical issues including geopolitics, access and equity, structural imbalances in Global North–South partnerships, and tensions shaped by neoliberal, postcolonial, and consumerist forces in study-abroad contexts. Drawing on a robust theoretical framework and a large-scale, multi-dimensional, and longitudinal research project, the book offers practical recommendations to strengthen study-abroad student engagement and learning in the Indo-Pacific. Im naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht zielt das Lernen in Kontexten primär darauf ab, die Lernenden näher an ihre Lebenswelt heranzuführen und so ihr Interesse zu steigern. Die vorliegende Studie fokussiert die Wahrnehmung und Wirksamkeit authentischer Kontexte mit physikalisch-technischem Bezug im Lehr-Lern-Labor und nimmt dabei sowohl die Lernenden als auch zukünftige Lehrende in den Blick. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit wurde das Potenzial von authentischen Kontexten im Bereich von Physik und Technik zur Förderung affektiver Merkmale wie Interesse, Einstellungen und Fähigkeitsselbstkonzept sowohl bei Lehramtsstudierenden wie bei Schüler:innen der Sekundarstufe I untersucht. In zwei Interventionsstudien wurden Themen aktueller Forschung als authentische Lernkontexte im Setting eines Lehr-Lern-Labors eingesetzt. Die empirische Prüfung der Interventionswirkung erfolgte anhand eines quantitativen, quasi-experimentellen Designs mit insgesamt N=176 Lehramtsstudierenden und N=1.156 Schüler:innen. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit zeigen, dass die stark fachlich geprägten Forschungsprojekte didaktisch aufbereitet als Lehr-Lern-Material von den Proband:innen authentisch eingeschätzt werden. Das Lernen mit solchen Kontexten ermöglicht eine positive Entwicklung affektiver Merkmale sowohl bei den Lehramtsstudierenden als auch bei den Schüler:innen.

Wie kann Lernerautonomie beim Fremdsprachenlernen wissenschaftlich begründet und praxisorientiert definiert und beschrieben werden? Welche Komponenten, Kompetenzen und Strategien gehören dazu? Welches Instrument kann Lerner und Lehrer in autonomen Lernprozessen unterstützen? In dieser Arbeit wird durch eine explorativ-interpretative Forschungsmethodologie ein dynamisches Autonomiemodell mit Deskriptoren entwickelt, das Lernerautonomie systematisch beschreibt und von Lernern oder Lehrern zur Selbsteinschätzung der eigenen Kompetenzen oder zur Reflexion über den Lernprozess verwendet werden kann. Das Autonomiemodell und die Deskriptoren wurden durch ein qualitatives Verfahren mit Experten am Centre de Recherches et d’Applications Pédagogiques en Langues (CRAPEL) der Université Nancy 2 und am Sprachenzentrum der Freien Universität Berlin validiert und mit Studierenden und Lehrenden erprobt.

Das Betreten einer Hochschule ist in der Regel weder verboten, noch wird vor Gefahren gewarnt und dennoch kann von der Baustelle Hochschule gesprochen werden: Die aktuellen Debatten an deutschen Hochschulen um Effizienz, Qualität und Ressourcenmanagement ähneln frappierend denen bekannter Großbaustellen. Themen wie Autonomie und Exzellenz von Hochschulen, Studiengangreform oder Drittmitteleinwerbung drängen die Frage nach einer Reform von Karrierewegen und Beschäftigungsbedingungen ebenso in den Hintergrund, wie sie ihre Dringlichkeit steigern. Becoming a Scholar provides a window into the lives of nine non-traditional doctoral students. This book offers a lived defense of liberal education. How does a college professor, on a daily basis, help students feel the value of liberal education and get the most from that education? We answer this question, as professors, each day in the classroom. John William Miller, a philosophy professor at Williams College from 1924-1960 and someone noted for his exceptional teaching, developed one form that this lived defense can take. Though Miller published very little while he was alive, the archives at Williams College hold unpublished notes and essays of this master teacher. In this book, Jeff Frank offers an extended commentary on one of these unpublished essays where Miller develops his thinking on liberal education. Frank develops the idea that presence is central to liberal education and offers suggestions for how professors can become an educative presence for students. The goal of this book is an invitation to other professors who value liberal education to think with Miller about how to develop their own lived defense of liberal education, each day, in their own classrooms. The tone of the book is meant to be invitational, at times even conversational, and the book concludes with some direct suggestions for how professors can live their own defense of liberal education.

Academia and its citizens, during periods of political violence and social conflict, are often overlooked. When attention is given, the focus tends to be on student activism, access to higher education, or curriculum development. The experiences of academics affected by conflict remain under-researched, despite the crucial role they play as educators and in generating, documenting, preserving and challenging knowledges. This is particularly concerning given that academics have−and continue to be−at risk as targets of sanction, persecution and oppression. This edited volume seeks to address this gap by exploring, and evoking, the complexities of academic subjectivity, place and practice in contexts where intellectual and state authority are contested or in transition. It features contributions by academics, artists and memory activists who have stepped bravely outside of the parameters of their disciplines, with modes of enquiry and representation that include conversations, vignettes and case studies, critical ethnographies, oral life histories, interviews, poetry and collage. Within the ten chapters are consideration of conflicts within Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, England, Mexico, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Palestine, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria and Venezuela. Being in Shadow and Light encourages a deeper understanding of academics’ navigation of these difficult conditions. The authors’ insider-outsider positioning brings forth the richness of ways through dilemmas−of omission, trauma, displacement, inheritance, injustice, distortion, desire. Grounding the many social, cultural, economic, and epistemic politics within academia, troubles the enclosure of ‘conflict’ in politics at the grand level, as if only within the realm of interest for state and international actors. Against sanitising the uncertainties and particularities of being an academic figure, the authors reflect on the states and sites of conflict as spaces which shape living. This work is a call to recognize, document and study the often-overlooked subjectivities and contributions of academics thinking and practicing within societies undergoing conflict(s) and in their aftermath. In Belonging and Identity in STEM Higher Education, leading scholars, teachers, practitioners and students explore belonging and identity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, and how this is impacted by disciplinary changes and the post-pandemic higher education context. In STEM fields, positivist approaches and a focus on numerical data can lead to assumptions that they are unemotional, impersonal disciplines. The need for mathematical competency, logical thinking and disciplinary contexts can be barriers to engagement, belonging and success in STEM. STEM ways of thinking, such as those underpinning abstract and complex mathematics, can form the basis for new ways of conceptualising belonging for both staff and students, going beyond socio-demographic and cultural differences. In this book, chapters and case study contributions analyse what is unique about STEM educational environments for staff and students in the UK, Ireland, Europe, Scandinavia and Asia. Am Beispiel des Einzelhandels zeigt die Autorin in ihrer Dissertation anhand einschlägiger interdisziplinärer Forschungsbefunde, dass die heutige globale, digitale und dynamische Arbeitswelt für die Beschäftigten von Entgrenzung und Subjektivierung geprägt ist und eine gelingende berufliche Identitätsbalance daher Voraussetzung für Wohlbefinden, Gesundheit, Kundenzufriedenheit, beruflichen und ökonomischen Erfolg ist. Zudem legt sie mittels eigener empirischer Fallstudien und weiterer Befunde dar, dass die bisherige handlungsorientierte berufsschulische Unterrichtspraxis die identitätsrelevanten Handlungsproblematiken der Auszubildenden weitgehend ausblendet. Daher fordert sie einen Paradigmenwechsel von einer rein handlungstheoretischen zu einer identitätstheoretischen beruflichen Didaktik. Hieran anknüpfend zeigt sie auf, wie dies gelingen kann. Sie präsentiert vorhandene Konzepte zur Förderung eines individuellen Berufsethos sowie eines berufsbiographischen Profils. Darüber hinaus schlägt sie als übergeordnetes integratives Ziel ein Leitbild moderner Beruflichkeit vor, welches durch eine individuelle berufliche Professionalisierung Win-Win-Konstellationen zwischen Beschäftigten und Arbeitsgebern anstrebt. Zudem identifiziert sie didaktische Prinzipien für berufliche Curricula, mit denen die Erfüllung des diesbezüglichen Bildungsauftrags der Berufsschule gelingen kann.

In dieser Arbeit wird die Frage untersucht, wie Lehrkräfte durch kooperative Unterrichtsentwicklung befähigt werden können, komplexe Nachhaltigkeitsthemen und Kompetenzen einer Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) im Fachunterricht zu integrieren. Die Kooperation zwischen Fachlehrkräften wird als ein Hilfsmittel angesehen, um den vielseitigen Dimensionen nachhaltiger Entwicklung gerecht zu werden. Dazu wurde ein neues kooperatives Online-BNE-Seminar für Lehramtstudierende entwickelt und evaluiert. Im Rahmen einer qualitativen Studie mit Lehramtsstudierenden wurden anhand von Leitfadeninterviews (N ,= ,13), Reflexionstexten und Fragebögen die unterschiedlichen Qualitäten der kooperativen Unterrichtsplanung einer monodisziplinären (Fach Physik) und einer interdisziplinären Seminargruppe (u. ,a. die Fächer Biologie, Chemie, Physik, Deutsch) untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sowohl die monodisziplinäre als auch die interdisziplinäre Kooperation der Studierenden bei der Planung, Erprobung und Reflexion von BNE-Unterricht zu einer hohen Qualität des Unterrichts beitragen. Die Physikstudierenden äußerten jedoch, dass die Perspektive der Physik allein nicht ausreicht, um alle Dimensionen von BNE abzudecken. From a vocational education perspective, Bildung im Zeitalter der großen Industrie represents a milestone in the historiography of the dual system in Germany. Although Blankertz sheds light on various problem areas, he places them under one guiding problem: the absence and return of pedagogy to vocational training. Within this span, Blankertz reconstructs the economic and political development in Germany in the 19th century, which led to an educational policy and ideological situation that was ultimately no longer questioned by pedagogy and from whose reality it started when it felt responsible for vocational training again. A foreword by Günter Kutscha and an afterword by the editor Christoph Porcher frame this new edition and comment on the work from today's perspective.

Wenn wir Alltag als die immer schon gegebene Weise des In-der-Welt-Seins verstehen, stellt sich bildungs-, kulturtheoretisch und didaktisch die Frage, wie das Subjekt Zugang zu anderen Dimensionen von Selbst und Welt finden kann. Alltag ist schließlich gerade dadurch gekennzeichnet, Lernprozesse zu vermeiden und sich auf Bildungsprozesse nicht einzulassen. Mit der Philosophie der symbolischen Formen Cassirers können die Eigenarten anderer Modi des In-der-Welt-Seins (Kunst, Wissenschaft, Religion, ggf. Spiel) herausgearbeitet werden. Erst in diesen "symbolischen Formen" werden die Bildungsprozesse möglich, wie sie die transformatorische Bildungstheorie beschreibt. Aus verschiedenen klassischen subjektphilosophischen Analysen (Kant, Hegel, Husserl) lässt sich die These ableiten, dass Bildungsprozesse nicht nur auf symbolische Formung angewiesen, sondern zudem auf der Ebene des Selbstbewusstseins zu verorten sind, d.h. nicht schon auf der Wahrnehmungs- oder Verstandesebene. Eine Pädagogik, die sich der daraus erwachsenden Herausforderungen entledigt, indem sie auf eine immer schon vorauszusetzende Alltäglichkeit setzt, zieht daher die Diagnose von Banalisierung auf sich.

In der Dissertation wird eine bildungsbereichsübergreifende Konzeption von Bildungsregionen entwickelt: theoretisch und empirisch fundiert. Die Studie über bedarfsorientierte Regionalisierungsansätze in der wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung basiert auf empirischen Daten und Fallbeispielen. In den Ergebnissen der Analyse bestätigt sich eine neue Regionalisierung als Gegenbewegung zur Internationalisierung, die in der wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung bewusst gestaltet wird. Damit ist sie auch ein Teil der wirtschaftlichen Regionalentwicklung, denn mit den Qualifizierungsangeboten werden die Fachkräfte vor Ort weitergebildet. Der Autor legt die erste Untersuchung zu diesem relevanten Thema der Bildungs- und Hochschulpraxis vor. Seine praxisorientierte Analyse untermauert die Regionalisierungstendenzen der wissenschaftlichen Hochschulweiterbildung mit einem theoretischen Fundament und schafft ein Modell als Orientierung für die Praxis.

Schwerpunktthema der Ausgabe 2025 ist die Etablierung der Tenure-Track-Professur, weitere Themen sind Arbeits- und Beschäftigungsbedingungen, Übergänge in die Qualifizierung und Qualifizierungsbedingungen in der Promotionsphase, Karrierewege und berufliche Perspektiven nach der Promotion sowie die Bedeutung der Befristung von Arbeitsverträgen. Die Vereinbarkeit von Familie und akademischer Karriere, Mobilitätsverhalten und die Effekte der Coronapandemie auf Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler in einer frühen Karrierephase werden ebenfalls behandelt. Basis des Berichtes sind Daten aus amtlichen Statistiken sowie aus regelmäßig durchgeführten Befragungen und Erhebungen.
